  2. GENERAL

The request to determine the bearing capacity of your proposed site, Plot # 52, Citadel Circular Avenue, Block-I, Gulberg Dream Villas, Islamabad was made by Skyline Developers, Islamabad to Construction Materials Testing Laboratory (CMTL) RDI, Rawat. The plot area consist of 35 x 70 size. Geotechnical studies has been carried out by excavation of 2 x test pits in depth of 12 feet below from existing ground level for evaluation of index and strength properties parameters for safe and an economical structure designing purpose. These strength and index parameters are tabulated in Anx-A of this report.
  1. SCOPE OF TESTING:-

This report presents a summary of test results which are conducted at the site and laboratory according to ASTM standard. Recommendations of bearing capacity and strength improvement technique of low strength soil of foundation durability are included.
  1. SITE INVESTIGATION:-
The site investigation of proposed Plot # 52, Citadel Circular Avenue, Block-I, Gulberg Dream Villas, Islamabad was carried out in the following recommended method of ASTM standard; Excavation of (2) Test pits at different location of plot area up to 12 ft. depth for soil profiling purpose
  1. Standardpenetration test (N-Value) was conducted   after 3 ft intervals in each test pits.
  2. Determination of in situ density and in situ moisture contents.
  3. Collection of disturbed and undisturbed soil samples for laboratory testing.
    1. TESTING AT SITE :-
Following tests were performed at site. StandardPenetration Test (SPT). This test was conducted at site according to ASTM Designation D-1586. The standard penetration blow count value “N” recorded at various depth intervals are tabulated in annex- A of this report. Average N value was reported as 4.375
  4. In situ density and Moisture Content Tests. In situ density and moisture content tests have been conducted in test pits and disturbed soil samples  are collected from test pits as per ASTM Standard and test results value are tabulated in annex –A of this report. Speedy Moisture Content was determined by AASHTO – 217
  5. Moisture Determination with Speedy
    1. LABORATORY TESTING:-
Soil samples were tested in the laboratory for index and strength properties. These tests were carried out in construction material testing laboratory (CMTL)
  6. RDI, Rawat as per ASTM Standard. Following properties were evaluated and results are tabulated in annex-A of this report;
    1. Sieve Analysis (AASHTO-88)
    2. Atterberg Limits (AASHTO -84-89)
    1. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS:-
Discussion on various site and laboratory tests results is as following; Classification of soil. Classification of soil most important parameter considering in foundation design. Basically Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) based on grain size analysis and plasticity Index (PI) of soil. Prescribed soil sample collected from site for sieve analysis test. Test carried out in CMTL for determine of plasticity index and %age passing through US sieve. Range of percent passing # 200 Sieve is 80.5 to 92.0 %. Moisture Contents.  Range of % moisture content were varying from 7.4 to 19.8. These values are tabulated in Anx-A of this report. Bulk Density. Bulk density varies from 113.5 to 119.6 Pcf. The value is tabulated in Anx-A of this report. Plasticity Index:- The soil showed plasticity and PI ranged from 8.4 to 8.8 as shown in Anx-A of the report.
    1. RECOMMENDATION
Based on site and laboratory testing following recommendations should be considered; The subsoil stratum consists of soil deposit which is natural. The entire lane has high moisture content in front bore holes. This is due to the depression formed along the road section. Bore Hole 1 contained high moisture from 9 feet.Care should be taken in foundation design as the proposed area lies under the proximity of active tectonic Fault which is MBT which produced Margalla hills. These Geological cares should be taken along with the engineering recommendations for the safe structural design.
    1. Allowable bearing capacity of proposed soil was calculated as 49 tsf and Raft foundation is recommended for a firm foundation design.
    2. Raft foundations have the advantage of reducing differential settlements as the concrete slab resists differential movements between loading positions.
    3. Depth of foundation, 0 ft. should be adopted from existing road level.
    4. The foundation soil should be well compacted prior to laying the footing for firm setting.
    5. Light Earth Moving Machinery can be used for the excavation purpose.
    6. Foundation soil must be compacted up to 98 % of maximum dry density of soil.
    7. Compaction test should be carried out after excavation and then after light earth moving compacter.

    1. A RCC CUTOFF wall must be constructed around the building area for the better confinement of foundation. It will stop the infiltration of water from outside source (i.e. precipitation). A granular Layer of 2 feet of thickness must be provided beneath the foundation. It is highly recommended that it should be compacted to 100 % of maximum dry density of granular material.
